In 1993, British architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins & Partners Overseas took on the challenge of creating the ground breaking super structure. The first sketch was drawn on the back of a napkin in the Chicago Beach Hotel in October 1993.

Under the direction of Tom Wright, the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah was designed to become the icon of Dubai. It was to be luxurious, a reflection of its Arabic heritage and traditions of hospitality — a beacon to light the city’s future.
